Description

Dieser Cluster gilt in der Clusterphysik als "magisch", da er besonders stabil ist. Die Ursache ist, dass dieser Cluster genau 68 Valenzelektronen besitzt (je 4 aus den 16 Siliziumatomen und 5 aus dem Vanadiumatom minus 1, da es sich um ein Kation handelt). Das führt zu einem "Schalenabschluss" und zu einer besonders starken Bindung zwischen den Atomen.

Die Gesamtgröße dieses Cluster-Moleküls beträgt in Wirklichkeit ca. 0,5 nm. In einen Millimeter passen also 2 Millionen dieser Cluster in einer Reihe.

In einer Größe von 5-6 cm ausgedruckt bietet dieser Cluster ein schönes Anschauungsmodell.
